Generally you use the word person when it is not important to say whether you are talking about a man or a woman Sandy's a really nice person. | unemployed people It is also advisable not to use words that contain man in the names of jobs, because this seems to mean that only men do that job or that the person is a man. So say that someone is a chairperson, rather than a chairman, especially when it is a woman. Similarly it is better to say spokesperson, businesspeople, or salesperson. Sometimes you do not need to use -man, -woman, or -person in the names of jobs at all. For example, people are more likely to say firefighter than fireman, police officer rather than policeman, and in British English, headteacher or head instead of headmaster or headmistress.
) ~2 v manned, manning to work at, use, or operate a system, piece of equipment etc  (The information desk is manned hours a day. | the first manned spacecraft) ~3 interjection especially AmE used to emphasize what you are saying  (Man, that was a lucky escape!)

  - O.E. man, mann "human being, person," from P.Gmc. *manwaz. Plural men shows effects of i-mutation. As an interjection of surprise or emphasis, first recorded 1896. Sense of "adult male" is late (c.1000); O.E. used wer and wif to distinguish the sexes, but wer began to disappear late 13c. and was replaced by man. Universal sense of the word remains in mankind, from O.E. mancynn, from cynn "kin;" and in manslaughter, from O.E. mannslжht (Anglian), mannslieht (W.Saxon), from slжht, slieht "act of killing." Similarly, L. had homo "human being" and vir "adult male human being," but they merged in V.L., with homo extended to both senses. A like evolution took place in Slavic languages, and in some of them the word has narrowed to mean "husband." PIE had two stems: *uiHro "freeman" (cf. Skt. vira-, Lith. vyras, L. vir, O.Ir. fer, Goth. wair) and *hner "man," a title more of honor than *uiHro (cf. Skt. nar-, Armenian ayr, Welsh ner, Gk. aner). Man-of-war was originally a soldier; meaning "vessel equipped for warfare" is from 1484. The Portugese man-of-war is so called for its sail-like crest. Manhandle is 1457, "to move by force of men" (without levers or tackle), originally nautical; slang sense of "to handle roughly" is from 1865. Man-about-town is from 1734; the Man "the boss" is from 1918. ...
